Samantha Cameron, the wife of Prime Minister David Cameron, has given birth to a baby girl while holidaying in Cornwall.
The 39-year-old gave birth to their fourth child at the Royal Cornwell Hospital in Truro.
A spokesperson for the couple said: “The Prime Minister and Mrs Cameron are delighted to announce the birth of their fourth child, a baby girl.
“Both the baby – who was born weighing 6lb 1oz – and Mrs Cameron are doing very well.
“The PM and Mrs Cameron would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the hospital for their help and kindness.”
The Camerons’ first child, Ivan, died last January aged six. The couple have two surviving children, Nancy, 6, and Arthur Elwyn, 4.
David Cameron said he plans to give his newborn daughter a Cornish name after she was born during his summer holiday in the county.
Mr Cameron said his wife Samantha was ”doing really well” after giving birth by caesarean section at around midday today.
He added she was looking through a name book while recovering in her hospital bed, and they had decided to give their new daughter a Cornish middle name in memory of the eventful holiday.
He said: ”We’re absolutely thrilled. She is a unbelievably beautiful girl and I’m a very proud dad, and both baby and mum seem to be doing really well, so really exciting.
”I’ve told the other two children who were thrilled, bouncing up and down, and would like to say hello to the new baby.
”I think we’ll have to have something Cornish in the middle. It’s very exciting, we’re on holiday and thought we were going to get through the holiday then have the baby, and it all just sort of kicked off a bit quickly.
”Everything seemed to go fine. Samantha woke up this morning and thought she was having contractions and it was all beginning to get going and so we thought we’d come to the hospital just to get everything checked out.
”Then things sort of sped up and it all happened very, very quickly and then baby popped out at about 12 o’clock and they seem to be doing fine.
”My job is to, you know, make the toast and the tea and things like that. But absolutely thrilling, really exciting – it’s just lovely they’re both doing so well.”
The Prime Minister added that hospital staff had been ”wonderful” since the couple arrived at hospital early this morning.
He said: ”It’s a wonderful hospital. They were all so friendly. Everyone put us completely at our ease because it’s quite nerve-wracking when things happen quickly and they were all absolutely wonderful. We were happy to be here in Truro and have the baby here.”
”It was a bit of a shock – I always thought it was possible because Samantha’s have tended to come a bit early and so she’d been having contractions for the past couple days on and off and just sort of thought this was time to come to the hospital and check out and see if everything was fine, and the next thing we knew we were all getting into the gear and the baby was coming out.
”There will be something Cornish in there somewhere. I’ve got the book out and Samantha’s having a look through it and she’ll decide, I’m sure, before long.”
When asked if he might consider the Cornish name Tamara he responded: ”Well we are on the right side of the Tamar.”
