Daniel Craig and Dame Judi Dench have teamed up to create a video for International Women’s Day featuring the James Bond star dressed up as a woman.
The video begins with the actor dressed as the famous spy in a sharp suit, while a voiceover provided by Dame Judi asks: “We’re equals aren’t we, 007?”
She then begins to reel off a list of statistics, such as how men are still more likely to be paid more than women for doing the same job, and that 30,000 women in the UK lose their jobs every year due to pregnancy.
Dame Judi then asks: “For someone with such a fondness for women, I wonder if you’ve ever considered what it might be like to be one?”
The 007 star then walks off screen and remerges wearing a knee-length dress, blonde wig and necklace.
More statistics are read out regarding violence against women in the UK and abroad and education rates around the world, while Daniel slowly removes his wig.
However, although the pair clearly had the best of intentions with the video, many online commentators expressed confusion as to what point James Bond’s cross-dressing antics were supposed to make.
One posted on Twitter: “So other than grab your attention, what point is being made by Daniel Craig dressed in drag??”
Another said: “And cross dressing Daniel Craig is going to fix things?”
The video was created by We Are Equals, a coalition of charities brought together by Annie Lennox to promote equality on International Women’s Day.
