This is the moment a cyclist loses a race on the finish line – after thinking he’d won and celebrating too early.
Video footage shows the excruciating moment the rider punched the air as he approaches the end.
But at the very last second he was overtaken by another competitor – who won by an inch.
The footage of Via Roma Twilight Criterium support race, shows Jamie Wilkins raise his arm in victory after a frantic race through the streets of Cirencester., Glos.
But he failed to notice fellow racer Jamie Penton powering towards the line.
It was only as Mr Wilkins crossed the line that he realises he has actually finished second.
The moment was captured by timing experts DB Max.
Posting on DB Max’s Facebook page Jamie said: “My stupid mistake, I admit readily. Pretty embarrassing but just a bike race. On to the next one.”
James Higgs of DB Max explained that the red line is the finish line and a transponder chip on the rear of each bike records them passing through when halfway between the two cables across the road – at the same time the front wheel crosses the red line.
“It’s the same system as used in the Tour de France and the Rio Olympics,” said James, from the Melksham-based firm.
“It was a great night’s racing, and we have had a lot of interest in this video.”
