A stunned couple were conned into paying hundreds of pounds for a bag of potatoes – thinking it was a laptop, police revealed today.
The couple were stopped in the High Street, in Huntingdon, Cambs., and offered a rucksack containing a state-of-the art laptop and iPhone for £650.
But after they agreed to buy the goods the scheming con man handed them an identical rucksack filled with potatoes and cardboard.
Pc Lorna Owen, from Huntingdon police station, today launched an appeal for information about the cruel con.
She said: ”I am appealing for anyone with information about who this man might be to contact police.
”I would also urge people to only purchase goods from genuine companies and make sure they know exactly who they’re buying from.”
Police are appealing for anyone who saw the con man between 12.30pm and 1.15pm on Tuesday September 28.
He is described as white, about 30-years-old, more than 6ft tall, with reddish brown hair and stubble and wearing light blue jeans.
Anyone who can help should call Cambridgeshire Constabulary on 0345 456 4564 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
