A traumatised hospital cleaner killed herself just weeks after she was brutally attacked by a gang of feral yobs, friends revealed today.
Tragic Nancy Wataku Kiongo, 50, was beaten up by teenage thugs when she refused to buy them cigarettes.
She was left bleeding on the ground and needed hospital treatment for back and arm injuries after the savage assault just before Christmas.
Weeks after the attack Kenyan-born Nancy was found dead in her rented flat in Coventry.
Her body had lain in the flat for a week before it was discovered last Friday by a worried friend.
Pals said the trauma of the attack had sent Nancy into a ”downward spiral.”
Friend Job Chege, 42, who discovered her body after Nancy failed to return his calls, said: ”The phone had been unplugged. It was like she didn’t want to hear from anyone.
”The attack affected her psychologically. It disturbed her and no one saw Nancy much after she moved.
”She went into a downward spiral.”
Nancy, who worked as a cleaner at the city’s university hospital, had even moved home after the attack on December 23.
Friends fear Nancy was so depressed she took her life by deliberately not taking her medication for diabetes.
Pastor Samuel Kinuthia, who leads the city’s Pentecostal church where Nancy worshipped, said: ”The yobs attacked her when she refused to buy them some fags.
”She wouldn’t do it because she was a Christian.
”We still don’t know why those yobs did that to Nancy because she was quiet and alone. I know she couldn’t work as much because of the injuries.
”She was very active in the church and loved to pray. But after the attack she became a recluse and didn’t talk to people.”
