The 26-year-old striker, who has just signed for the champions for a British record £50 million, said he was joining “one of the biggest clubs in Europe”.

Torres also told the club’s website “how happy he is” and how he wanted to be at a “level I’m supposed to stay at”.

He said: “It’s the kind of team I like to play against. It’s the kind of team I want to play for.

“It’s always very tough to play against Chelsea – one of the biggest teams in Europe, always fighting for everything.

“This is the target for every footballer – to try to play for one of the top clubs in the world and I can do it now. I have to be very, very happy as I am.

“It’s my dream to win the Champions League and I’m sure I can, playing for Chelsea. I think all my team-mates share that dream with me and hopefully we can.

“Obviously Drogba is the best striker in the world by far. It’s a big responsibility for me to play alongside them because the level they have is so high.

“I am so happy and so proud to be here, finally, after these tough days. At the of the day I can say I’m a Chelsea player and I’m very, very happy.

“I just want to be at the level I’m supposed to stay at. It’s a great club with a great responsibility. I’m prepared for the challenge.”

Despite a successful spell at Liverpool, Torres failed to win any club trophies while he filled his cabinet with World Cup and Euro medals with Spain.

In another twist of fate, Torres – who was idolised on Merseyside – will be lining up for Chelsea against Liverpool this Sunday when the two clubs face each other at Stamford Bridge.

Torres added: “It is like the destiny.

“I will never say anything bad about Liverpool, I have been very happy there, but now the history is different and I am playing for Chelsea.

“If I have the chance to play I will do my best for Chelsea and hopefully I can score.”

In a chaotic transfer deadline day, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich also splashed out £21.3 million on Brazilian defender David Luiz, who signed from Benfica.
