Brighton was today hailed as the best English city to live in.
The trendy south coast haven was hailed for its clean sea front and town centre, quality of life and friendly residents.
It was found to have an ideal balance between a busy city and picturesque town and also scored highly for its architecture and good rates of pay for employees.
People living in Brighton also emerged as the happiest – both financially and with their family – as well as enjoying a community spirit and having an almost perfect work/life balance.
They are also more likely to walk their kids to school and have more uninterrupted time to themselves than anywhere else.
Second in the list of places best to live was Bristol, followed by the university city of Oxford.
The naval city of Plymouth was fourth and the cycling capital, Cambridge, was fifth.
The study, carried out among 5,000 people in 20 cities by www.OnePoll.com, asked respondents to rank each aspect of life in the city in which they live.
Yesterday a spokesman said: ”Those living in Brighton seem to have everything.
”They live in a lovely part of the country where they have miles of beautiful coastline.
”Brighton is also a relatively small city compared to London, which could mean it still has a community feel, something you would be hard pushed to find elsewhere.
”Residents have what they need at their fingertips – a pretty centre, great night life and friendly people.
”England is home to some of the most beautiful cities in the world and Brighton can proudly fly the flag as the nation’s favourite.”
While Brighton topped the majority of categories, other cities also emerged as decent areas to settle down in.
Bristol was hailed for its architecture, friendly feel and close proximity to the Somerset countryside and Devon coast.
Oxford scored highly for its culture, while parents spend longest with their children, followed closely by Plymouth mums.
Residents of the south west naval port also enjoy the shortest commute to work – just a 15 minute trip.
It further emerged that while those in York are happiest with their work and health, those in Cambridge are most content leaving their kids with a neighbour.
London boasts the best nightlife and transport links.
Mancunians pointed to bustling shopping centres and close proximity to the countryside as plus points, whilst those living in Liverpool hailed their city as great for sight-seeing and music history.
