Actor Benedict Cumberbatch has gone from heroes to villain for his latest role – playing Richard III.

The Sherlock Holmes star swapped his deerstalker for a crown as he filmed a scene for a new BBC production.

He was spotted in full regal attire sat on a mahogany throne in Wells Cathedral in Somerset as production gets underway for The Hollow Crown.

The four-part drama, which will not be screened until 2016, is based on William Shakespeare’s history plays.

BBC2 recently released a teaser shot of the actor on horseback after confirming he would be playing the part of the wicked monarch on their official Twitter page.

The Hollow Crown will also star Dame Judi Dench and Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville.

Cumberbatch, 38, has had a busy few months juggling filming with the promotion of his latest film, The Imitation Game, which is set to hit the big screen on November 21.

In that he plays Alan Turing, the unsung hero of World War II whose genius cracked Hitler’s Enigma code machines.

The BAFTA-nominated heartthrob has also found time to enjoy dinner dates with his theatre director girlfriend, Sophie Hunter.
