A life-size figurine of the vigilante who struck fear into the hearts of criminals and public officials alike is set to go on sale.
The impressive Batman statue, which was proudly on display in London’s City Hall as part of an art exhibition last month, is to go up for auction in a bid to raise money for charity.
London Games Festival 2012 saw over 100 pieces of art based on computer games displayed at City Hall on the banks of the Thames.
Boris Johnson’s office was overrun with unique artwork and designs based on computer games, and now it is hoped the charity auction will raise many thousands of pounds for SpecialEffect – who help severely disabled youngsters get more pleasure out of life.
The auction includes rare and never-before-seen pieces from games such as Batman: Arkham City, from London-based developer Rocksteady Studios.
The collection will be split into four weekly online auctions beginning every Monday until December 3.
Included in the initial batch are three signed pieces from Batman: Arkham City, two Fable 3 pieces signed by creative director Peter Molyneux and the artists, a signed Metal Gear Solid ‘Raiden’ canvass, plus pieces from Tomb Raider, Dishonored, Moshi Monsters and Runescape.
Festival director Kirsty Payne said: “We were absolutely overwhelmed with the number of people that came to the exhibition.
“People from all walks of life – those who played games, and those who didn’t – travelled far and wide to appreciate the phenomenal pieces of art which have been kindly donated by the industry.
“We were also immensely gratified by how everyone reacted when we showed them the work that SpecialEffect does – and we’re incredibly excited about the potential this auction has.
“Not only is it going to be a good Christmas for the winning bidders, but for those who benefit from SpecialEffect’s brilliant work too.”
