There was fresh concern for the mental state of pop star Adam Ant yesterday after a ‘bizarre’ show – including incoherent four-letter rants about how he hates women.
Fans were left ”bitterly disappointed” and ”deeply worried” after the 80s idol spent huge chunks of the gig whining about his two acrimonious divorces and his mistrust of females.
Instead of treating the crowd to big hits like ‘Stand and Deliver’ the foul-mouthed singer also ranted about how badly he had been treated by the music industry.
Fans say Adam, 59, ”stumbled and mumbled” throughout the lack lustre gig – and compared it to the famously shambolic concerts of troubled singer Amy Winehouse.
Other Ant fans say he appeared troubled during the show at Westland Conference and Leisure Complex, in Yeovil, Somerset, on Sunday.
Ant, real name Stuart Goddard, has battled with bipolar disorder and his latest strange antics have left fans worried about his wellbeing.
Reviewer Emma Slee, editor of the Western Gazette newspaper, wrote: “He spent a great deal of time talking to the crowd about his two acrimonious divorces and his mistrust of women – plus how badly treated he felt he had been by the music industry and the press.
“He also attempted to tell several jokes which were met with mixed reviews. His colourful language failed to impress some and there was even some heckling.
“Fans left behind debated his mental state, whether he was intoxicated and whether their memories of their 80s idol had been ruined forever.”
At the end of the gig – which cost £22.50 a ticket – Ant tore strips off his sweaty vest and threw them into the crowd before leaving the stage and refusing to do an encore.
Furious fans took to Twitter to express their disappointment over his performance.
Rupert Medeiros, from London, said: “Round trip of 200 Miles to see an idol of the 80’s in Yeovil .. Really let down did nt stand up and deliver!!!!
Samantha Easter from Somerset said: “Not the most exciting gig @adamaofficial at Westland, Yeovil”.
Local Mike Dent ?wrote: “Adam Ant in Yeovil – so far off his tits and playing unrecognisable new stuff – bit unhappy.
“Waste of cash… couldn’t stand let alone deliver #adamantshit”
Another wrote: ”More Winehouse than Adam Ant. The bloke’s having a break down”.
Ant began his European tour on February 14 and next plays at London’s Hammersmith Apollo on Saturday (19).
Adam Ant married Carol Mills in 1975, but the pair – who reportedly lived with her parents – divorced soon after.
He dated actresses Amanda Donohoe and then Jamie Lee Curtis in the late 70s and early 80s, before a romance with Heather Graham in the early 90s.
He married Lorraine Gibson in 1997, a 25-year-old a PR assistant for Vivienne Westwood.
A year later the couple had a daughter, Lily, but separated soon after.
