A toddler is fighting for life after being hit by her own family’s car in a tragic parking accident.
The unnamed 19 month-old girl suffered severe head injuries when the red Vauxhall Zafira slowly rolled into her in a sports centre car park.
A member of staff at the YMCA John Kitto Centre in Plymouth, Devon, gave her first aid before paramedics arrived.
The little girl was rushed to nearby Derriford Hospital before being flown to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol which has a specialist neurosciences department.
She was in a coma yesterday with what police described as ‘life-changing’ injuries.
The youngster was part of a family of six who had travelled from Middlesborough to compete at an invitational tournament hosted by Plymouth Roller Hockey Club.
Three teams from Plymouth and one from Middlesbrough and Halifax in West Yorkshire were also taking part with around 45 children aged 10-13 involved.
Organisers of the roller hockey tournament said the teams from the North had spent Saturday night in Plymouth before competing on Sunday.
The YMCA employee who helped the child, who asked not to be named, said: “I kept her awake and still.
“Her father was on the phone calling the ambulance.
“Her parents were quite calm. I don’t think they knew how serious it was.
“The ambulance was here in three or four minutes and there were two police cars.”
Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident which happened at 9.35am on Sunday morning.
