A sleepy Somerset town became a laughing stock on Twitter today after a mysterious object floating in a river became headline news.
Hundreds of locals flocked to the centre in Bridgwater after news spread of an ‘unidentified floating object’ in the River Parrett.
The crowd watched in amazement as the object came to a standstill near the Town Bridge.
Some speculated that it was a dead pig or turtle, while others reckoned it was a dolphin.
Within hours a story appeared on the Bridgwater Mercury newspaper’s website under the headline: ”Crowd gather on town bridge”.
One local, Coral Pople, told the paper: ”I’ve been here for 45 minutes. Everyone was saying it was a turtle, but it looks more like a pig to me.”
Internet jokers then seized on the article and bombarded the website with comments mocking the ‘non story’.
One wrote: ”Believe me, it will be the most exciting thing that happens in Bridgwater for decades.”
The issue even became a trending topic on Twitter yesterday afternoon, ranking alongside Wayne Rooney and Kurt Cobain.
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: ”We were made aware of a large number of people looking into the river.”
In 2009 a similar number of onlookers gathered at Town Bridge after a dead cow was spotted floating near the banks of the river.
So… what was it?!
