A student was celebrating today after breeding a species of fish – which is extinct in the wild.
Kyle Allen bred the Goodeid – real name Ameca splendens – as part of an extended project.
Goodeids are freshwater fish originally from Mexico but they have gone from being an endangered species to listed as extinct in the wild.
But Kyle has successfully bred one using fish loaned from an aquarium to his West Somerset Community College in Minehead, Somerset.
Kyle, studying animal management, said: ”It has taken me time every day checking the tank, water quality and ensuring that the diet is the best one going. I am really pleased.”
