Robbie Fowler: greatest ever striker?

February 21, 2011 | by | 4 Comments

Former Liverpool star Robbie Fowler is the game’s greatest ever striker according to former teammate and good friend Steve McManaman.

Player-turned-pundit McManaman, 39, was naming his dream 11 for the football magazine Four Four Two when he picked out Fowler, nicknamed the Toxteth Terror.

Fowler, who currently plays for Perth Glory in Australia, scored 183 goals in 369 matches for Liverpool, leaving a lasting impression on his former England teammate.

McManaman said: “The greatest goalscorer of all time, ‘Growler’ was fantastic at putting the ball in the net.

“Like others here, he’s had his knocks along the way, which stopped him becoming even better.”

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid winger would partner Fowler with the Brazilian Ronaldo, who announced his retirement from the game last week.

Other players to make Macca’s starting line-up include Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Paul Gascoigne and John Barnes. And there were shock places for former defender Rob Jones and ex-Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall.

But McManaman has come in for some stick from Liverpool fans for omitting current Reds captain Steven Gerrard and Barca star Lionel Messia from the squad while including Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench.

One Liverpool FC forum user, Dos Santos, said: “What do you mean no Pele, no Maradona, no Kaka and worst of all no Gerrard!!!”

Vchickar added: “C Ronaldo certainly doesn’t deserve it but Messi and Gerrard do because Gerrard has been hailed by the greatest footballers of all time like Pele and Zidane.”

Greates goalscorer and greatest sriker isn’t the same thing. Your headline is a bit misleading, perhaps you should change it to what he actually said..

  2. Jsjimstan says:

i’ve been a liverpool fan all my life but people go over the top with fowler. dalglish was, obviously, in a completely different class. i’d also put keegan and torres, before this season, way ahead of fowler. rush would probably be close.

  3. Voland says:

I’m sorry Steve, but choosing Roy Evans as manager says it all. A faithful servant to Liverpool FC but manager of your all-time dream team seems rather fanciful…

  4. Maguire says:

This 442 feature asks them to pick the best players they’ve played withm which doesn’t include c ronaldo or messi. stupid scousers.
