A right-wing extremist has been given a football banning order for shouting racist abuse – at Muslim CUB SCOUTS having a picnic.
Martyn Howlett, 43, was returning from a Bristol Rovers match when he spotted the youngsters enjoying an alfresco meal outside their headquarters in Horfield, Bristol.
He made crude Nazi salutes, yelled extreme racial abuse, and gestured at a British National Party badge he was wearing at the time.
Howlett shouted: ”It’s BNP, racist, fascism and Hitler” at the children, who were aged between eight and ten.
He then directed his attack on a young girl wearing a headscarf.
When challenged by Scout leader Sohail Javaid, Howlett repeatedly said: ”This is our country, get out.”
When police arrived, the thug told them: ”What is wrong with doing this? I am a right-wing extremist and I hate blacks.”
Bristol Magistrates Court heard that Howlett had drunk about four-and-a-half pints of beer before the incident on May 1.
Michael Hartnell, prosecuting, said: ”The children were scared and extremely concerned for their safety.”
He pleaded guilty to committing racially aggravated disorderly behaviour and was given a two-year conditional discharge.
But he was also given a three-year football ban, which prohibits him from entering an area of 750m around the Memorial Stadium on Bristol Rovers match days for three hours before kick-off and two hours afterwards.
He is also banned from going to any football match in England or Wales, he must surrender his passport to police before England away games, and is not allowed to travel to towns or cities where Bristol Rovers or England are playing.
The court heard how Hartnell, of Eastville, Bristol, had recieved a caution in 2008 for similar behaviour.
