Residents in St Endellion yesterday expressed their ”surprise” and ”delight” that Prime Minister David Cameron named his daughter after their tiny Cornish village.
Mr Cameron and wife Samantha named their daughter Florence Rose Endellion in reference to the village close to where they were on holiday.
Locals in the village, which contains little over a dozen houses, say the name will put their village ”firmly on the map”.
Mark Symons, 41, who runs a farm shop and tea rooms in St Endellion, described the news as ”fantastic for the area”.
Mr Symons, of Trevathan Farm, said: ”It’s quite a surprise that he’s named his daughter after this village as it is a quiet place where not a lot really happens.
”It will put this place firmly on the map and it’s fantastic for the area really. There is not a lot named after this place so he must have just liked the name.
”There’s not much here – just a dozen or so houses, a big church and our farm shop – so this is quite a big deal for the village. We’re delighted.
”It is certainly a pretty name. There is a cheese named after the village but I suspect she wasn’t named after that – I hope not anyway.”
Elizabeth Uglow, clerk of St Endellion Parish Council, said: ”We’re delighted – it’s an honour that they have named their baby after us.
”We’re a small village – we only have a church, a tea room and several holiday cottage businesses. It’s very rural.”
