The son of Pink Floyd legend Dave Gilmour has apologised after he was seen swinging from the Cenotaph at yesterday’s student protests in London.
Charlie Gilmour was pictured swinging from the Whitehall memorial on a Union Jack – a despicable scene that has been widely condemned.
In a statement, the 21-year-old Cambridge University student expressed his “deepest apologies for the terrible insult to the thousands of people who died bravely for our country”.
He said: “I feel nothing but shame. My intention was not to attack or defile the Cenotaph. Running along with a crowd of people who had just been violently repelled by the police, I got caught up in the spirit of the moment.
“I did not realise that it was the Cenotaph and if I had, I certainly would not have done what I did.
“I feel additionally mortified that my moment of idiocy has distracted so much from the message yesterday’s protest was trying to send out.
“Those who are commemorated by the Cenotaph died to protect the very freedoms that allow the people of Britain the right to protest and I feel deeply ashamed to have, although unintentionally and unknowingly, insulted the memory of them.
In a march against the proposed increase of student fees, scenes turned nasty as protesters fought with police.
A car carrying Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall was attacked as they travelled to the London Variety Performance with thugs paintballing the Royal Family’s £1 million Rolls-Royce.
One protester was pictured urinating on the statue of Winston Churchill while both The Treasury and The UK Supreme Court had windows smashed and graffiti daubed over them.
Twelve police officers and 43 protesters were injured during clashes with authorities making 26 arrests.
The Government passed the bill to increase tuition fees.
