Fernando Torres wants to leave Liverpool because of the club’s failure to win any trophies, according to a former international teammate.
Luis Garcia, who left Liverpool around the same time Torres joined the Anfield outlet, revealed the Spanish striker wants to win domestic honours – something he’s failed to do on Merseyside.
He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Torres left Atletico looking for trophies and titles and he has not achieved any of them and maybe it is time to think about it.
“Liverpool are in a position where they are struggling in the league and maybe with all the changes they have done it is a good moment to leave.”
Torres shocked the Liverpool faithful on Friday when he handed in a written transfer request after Chelsea had a £35 million bid for the 26-year-old rejected.
Liverpool rejected Torres’ request but it’s now understood they are willing to let the striker go – if Chelsea stump up the £50 million asking price.
The Spanish striker signed for Liverpool in 2007 from Athletico Madrid and became an instant success on Merseyside, forging a potent partnership with influential skipper Steven Gerrard.
But despite a prolific strike rate, Torres has appeared disinterested this season and, despite a resurgence under Dalglish, is adamant on leaving Anfield – despite the signing of Luis Suarez to bolster Liverpool’s underpowered strike force.
Torres was at Liverpool’s Melwood training ground yesterday but trained on his own. Chelsea are expected to make another offer for the striker, nicknamed El Nino.
But the deal will be anything but done with any transfer based around Torres passing a strict medical. The striker, in the past, has been dogged by injury.
His announcement is a bitter blow for Liverpool fans who feel let down by Torres, who always said he wouldn’t leave the Kop for another English club.
