Lady Gaga has created one of her craziest videos yet for her new single Born This Way.
The singer, who emerged from an egg to perform the song at the Grammys, is seen giving birth to aliens and dressed as a tuxedo-wearing zombie in the promo.
Set in outer space, the video begins with Gaga on board a throne-like spaceship floating through the sky.
The music-free section carries a voiceover saying: “This is the manifesto of mother monster.
“As the wombs numbered and the mitosis of the future began, it was perceived that this infamous moment in life is not temporal, it is eternal. and thus began the the beginning of the new race, a race within the race of humanity, a race which bears no prejudice, no judgment, but boundless freedom.”
The screen then splits in two and appears to show Gaga giving birth to alien-like eggs with her face etched on.
As well as the song’s title, the scene may be a reference to Gaga’s nicknames for herself and her fans: ‘mother monster’ and the ‘little monsters’.
The voiceover then continues: “But on that same day, as the eternal mother hovered in the multiverse, another more terrifying birth took place: the birth of evil,” as Gaga is seen spinning around while holding a machine gun.
“And as she herself split into two, rotating in agony between two ultimate forces, the pendulum of choice began its dance.
“It seems easy, you imagine, to gravitate instantly and unwaveringly towards good. But she wondered, how can I protect something so perfect without evil?”
The music then starts with a bikini-clad Gaga-leading a troupe of near naked dancers against a black background.
She then dresses up as a scary tuxedo-wearing skeleton, complete with facial ridges and a long pink ponytail wig.
The video was directed by fashion photographer Nick Knight. The Alexander McQueen snapper was also responsible for Bjork’s controversial 2001 video Pagan Poetry.
