Kate Middleton gets her first official portrait… made out of PIZZA

The first official portrait of Kate Middleton may have had mixed reviews but here is one tasteful portrait guaranteed to go down a treat — the Duchess of Cambridge in a pizza.

Restaurateur Domenico Crolla, 46, took two hours to painstakingly create the edible artwork using melted cheese and a scalpel.

He is hoping to top off his Royal series with a portrait of her husband Wills and then do a family picture with their new arrival in July.

Father-of-two Dom, who owns award winning Bella Napoli in Shawlands, Glasgow, said: “I wasn’t a fan of the official portrait of Kate, I thought it was awful.

“I saw the picture and thought I could do a bit better in a pizza.  I think mine’s a little more flattering, and at least you can eat it afterwards.”

Dom started his pizza painting career just over a year ago after teaching himself to sculpt cheese.

He has created portraits of Marlon Brando, Barack Obama and Marilyn Monroe and was even commissioned to create a pizza of martial arts legend Bruce Lee by the star’s daughter Shannon Lee.

Once the pizzas are complete they are coated in resin to preserve them.

George Michael also popped into Dom’s restaurant for a pizza when he played in Glasgow in September, but was too shy to be photographed.

And in November Dom’s restaurant was hailed as one of the best Italian restaurants in the UK, winning one of six gold awards from the Pizza and Pasta Association.

Dom said: “It’s always a guessing game in the restaurant as to who I have drawn, sometimes people get it straight away and sometimes it takes a little longer but we all enjoy it.

“I like making portraits of people in the public eye because that’s what people want to see.

“I would love to try one of Rihanna because she’s everywhere at the moment but I am looking forward to doing a Kate and Wills family portrait with their new baby.

“I think that will go down really well.”
