Eight illegal immigrants have been caught trying to sneak past border guards – inside a lorry full of YOGHURT pots.
The men, from Vietnam, Iran and Afghanistan, climbed into the back of a refrigerated truck in France bound for Milton Keynes, Bucks..
Guards from the UK Border Agency working at the port of Calais spotted the lorry’s rear doors were not secured.
When they searched the German-registered truck they found inside eight men hiding amongst the pots of Delice de France yoghurt.
The illegal immigrants men from Vietnam, Iran and Afghanistan were discovered in the early hours of August 8 and handed over to French authorities.
The haulage firm faces #16,000 fine unless it can prove they took required steps to secure the lorry.
Carole Upshall, the UK Border Agency’s Director for operations in Northern France, said: ”This is exactly why we base so many of our staff in France – to stop illegal immigrants before they can reach the UK.
”As well as physically searching vehicles, our staff use sniffer dogs, heartbeat detectors and carbon dioxide probes to find people hiding in lorries.”
The UK Border Agency estimate more than 29,000 attempts by illegal immigrants to cross the channel were thwarted in 2009.
Last week an illegal immigrant was hauled to safety by a fishing boat after he tried to escape police by jumping in the SEA.
