Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge has condemned the Man United fans who marred a youth cup tie by chanting songs about the Hillsborough tragedy.
The Reds Under 18 team were facing Man United’s Under 18s at Anfield in a hotly-anticipated quarter-final clash.
Man United were victorious in a brilliant but fiery encounter, coming from two goals down to win 3-2 in a clash which saw both sides end with nine men.
However, the match was marred by a small section of the crowd singing distasteful songs about the Hillsborough and Heysel tragedies from the 1980s.
At the Heysel stadium disaster in 1985, 39 football fans died while 96 Liverpool supporters died as a result of the Hillsborough tragedy in 1989.
And Aldridge, who played at Hillsborough that day, has slammed the sick fans who chanted vile songs about the event.
He told the Liverpool Echo: “I have never seen anything like that before at a youth game and I never want to see anything like it again. It was disgusting.
“You get used to banter from United fans when they come to Anfield but to hear those songs about Heysel and Hillsborough was just horrible.”
Three Man United fans were arrested and six were ejected from the stadium during the nasty scenes which threaten to overshadow a thrilling encounter between two of the English football’s brightest youth teams.
Typical Man Utd fans they are all the same and always will be.
How would they like it if we sang songs about Munich are maybe thats what I should do then next time they are on tv.
Liverpool fans have already been shown on TV singing songs about Munich.
Thanks for showing what a typical classless Liverpool fan acts like though :))
As a season ticket holder at Old Trafford I’m disgusted by this. Really lets us down.
However, I’m not saying that two wrongs make a right, but Aldridge is talking a load of rubbish. Everytime Liverpool come to OT they always sing songs about Munich. And let’s not forget the famous Spirit Of Shankly debacle by Anthony Goddfrey: http://therepublikofmancunia.com/finally-press-expose-spirit-of-shankley-idiots/
I agree, we don’t need these chants, they are disgusting. However, I think “typical Man Utd fans” is a bit unfair. Considering both clubs have had massive tragedies in the past, this could be one topic off limits despite the heated rivalry.
Must add, just as disgusting as those Liverpool fans, seen on Sky Sports pictures, chanting ‘Munich’ at the United-Liverpool game at Old Trafford earlier this season. A significant lack of protests for that at the time.
Liverpool fans were caught on camera singing Munich songs in the FA cup tie earlier this year. Youtube it.
All fans have a bad element to them, just seems Liverpool have a few more – but we’re not allowed to talk about that!!! Shhhhhh.
This is disgusting, but I think Mr. Aldridge could also have a word with his own fans about “Munich” songs….
We get Munich songs everywhere we go. I was called ‘a Munich c***’ twice leaving Anfield on Sunday. In defence of our fans there, it was about 20 fans trying to start the songs and everyone else just ignored it, some started other more dignified chants over the top of them.
Aldridge said 300 fans were singing them on his Twitter which was a joke given a lot of United’s section was made up of United club officials and the players friends & families. Problem was, the ground was empty either side of the two stands behind the goals so even one person shouting could be heard on the pitch and in the directors box. No place for them chants, but it needs saying that Liverpool have scummy fans also.
Liverpool do sing about Munich when they come to Old Trafford and there is proof of this all over the internet. Not only that – The Spirit Of Shankley lot where openly singing it at one of their meetings so get some balance in your accusations before you put a Halo over Liverpool F.C.
