Liverpool defender Glen Johnson praised Luis Suarez after the club’s new striker scored on his debut against Stoke City.
Suarez, who completed his move from Ajax on transfer deadline day, came on as a second-half substitute against the Potters.
And just 16 minutes into his debut, the 24-year-old frontman timed his run perfectly following a through ball and rounded goalkeeper Asmir Begovic before slotting home at the Kop end.
Suarez will have Stoke’s Andy Wilkinson to thank for his fortunate goal after the defender, who should have cleared the shot, could only deflect it into the net off the post – giving Suarez a dream debut.
The goal followed Raul Meireles’s opener at the start of the second half – the in-form Portuguese midfielder’s third goal in four matches.
And defender Glen Johnson heaped praise on the new number 7 Suarez’s “fantastic debut”.
He told the club’s official website: “It is difficult sometimes to make your debut in a tight game but he came on and he quickly settled in.
“For him to come on and get a goal was brilliant and we are all delighted for him.
“It’s definitely his goal. The law says if the ball is going on target it’s your goal so he will take that.”
Suarez follows the likes of Kenny Dalglish, Kevin Keegan, Stan Collymore, David Speedie, Nigel Clough and El Hadgi Diouf in scoring on his Liverpool debut.
Liverpool’s third successive win keeps them in seventh place – two points behind sixth place Sunderland and six points behind Tottenham in fifth, with the London club having a game in hand.
