Crews from Newton Abbot, Bovey Tracey and Moretonhampstead, as well as the water bowser from Torquay, attended the scene at Hatherleigh Lane after receiving a report at 14.41 that a small barn was alight.

A pair of puppies just two days old have been saved after a barn fire thanks to pet-friendly oxygen masks.

The tiny sheepdogs were close to death when they were rescued from a smoke-logged farm building.

But firemen gently held their faces inside the special masks – recently donated by a charity – and slowly brought them back to life.

Tragically three other puppies lost their lives in the blaze which ripped through a small barn at Bovey Tracey, Devon on Monday afternoon.

But the toll would have been higher without the specialist new animal kit from the Smokey Paws charity which had been donated just weeks before.

One of the surviving puppies had burns and gel was applied to ease its pain.

Their mother escaped the barn uninjured and both surviving young have now been taken to the vet for further treatment.

Newton Abbot Fire Station said: “We have only had this vital kit for a few weeks and it’s paid off already, and hopefully will save many more loved pets in the future.

“Our kit recently donated by KONG Company has led to these two puppies having an increased chance of survival.”
