Chelsea’s new number 9 Fernando Torres has revealed he won’t celebrate if he scores against Liverpool on Sunday.
Torres, who signed for the champions from Liverpool on Monday in a £50 million mega deal, was speaking in his first press conference for Chelsea.
The 26-year-old told reporters at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground he “had a lot of respect for Liverpool fans” and that “I won’t celebrate if I score”.
Torres also told the journalists crammed into the press lounge that he gave his best from his first day until his last at Liverpool but couldn’t turn down the opportunity to join Chelsea once the champions came knocking.
However, despite his respect towards Liverpool in the press conference, it’s unlikely he’ll ever endear himself to the Anfield faithful following his acrimonious departure.
Torres has been vilified by fans for the way he left the club with some supporters burning shirts with his name and number on the back.
He could become an even bigger hate figure come 6pm on Sunday after Chelsea boss Carlo Ancellotti confirmed he would be in the squad for the match. However, the Italian wouldn’t confirm if he would start with Torres.
Liverpool new man Luis Suarez is in line to make his full debut following his goalscoring cameo in the midweek victory over Stoke City. Defender Jamie Carragher is also set for a return after dislocating his shoulder in November.
Sunday’s clash between Chelsea and Liverpool is expected to reach fever pitch with fans of both teams exchanging insults on the internet.
Chelsea fans have already re-worked Liverpool’s famous Fernando Torres song while a pair of sports journalists supporting either team were involved in a war of words on social networking site Twitter.
Jamie Carragher is favourite to be the first person to foul Torres with the Spaniard admitting he hopes to score against his former club.
One man unlikely to feature against his former club is Liverpool man Joe Cole who tweaked his knee in training and is a doubt for the match.
He’s joined a top level team? Buuuuuuuuuuuulllllllllllllsssssssssshhhhhhooooot.
A genuine top level team has won at least two European Cups….oh…that’s right Fernando…the club you just left, LFC, has WON FIVE EUROPEAN CUPS…not to mention SEVERAL UEFA CUPS; EIGHTEEN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS; COUNTLESS FA AND LEAGUE CUPS AND VARIOUS SUPER CUPS ETC….THAT, MY LITTLE TWO-FACED MERCENARY, IS WHAT A REAL PWOPAH (AS YOUR NEW COCK-KNEED PAL JT WUD SAY) TOP LEVEL CLUB.
I have to say, as a liverpool fan, that I am dissapointed to see FT leave. However he wanted to win trophies….thats the only reason he left his beloved Athletico. At the time we looked like seriously challenging for honours but now we dont. If he wanted to just play football and be idolized by the fans he would still be in madrid!! As with any profession you aim to be successful and people move companies for better opportunities. Its no different with football. I feel priveliged to have seen FT play for liverpool as he s truly an awesome sight when he is in full flow.
