Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.I.Am has revealed he suffers from tinnitus.
The painful hearing condition causes sufferers to experience a constant ringing in their ears, meaning they can never hear silence. It can vary in severity from a light buzz to a noise as loud as a plane going over head.
It is caused by exposure to loud music and affects many musicians. In some cases it can lead to complete deafness.
Will.I.Am told The Sun: “I don’t know what silence sounds like any more. Music is the only thing which eases my pain.
“I can’t be still. Work calms me down. I can’t be quiet as that’s when I notice the ringing in my ears… I don’t know how long I’ve had this but it’s gradually got worse.”
The 35-year-old rapper will be pleased to hear that a host of indie musicians, including Pete Doherty, are clubbing together to help out tinnitus sufferers this week.
The all-star ‘supergroup’ are recording a cover of John Cage’s silent composition 4’33”, with proceeds from the single going to charities including The British Tinnitus Association.
Will.I.Am also told The Sun that he is a huge fan of pal Cheryl Cole’s show X Factor, which he has appeared on as both guest mentor and performer this season.
He said: “I love X Factor. I’m backing Cher Lloyd to win and would definitely sign her. She’s unique and it took a unique person to choose her.
“You’d think Rebecca was hanging out with Marvin Gaye everyday, she has so much soul. I would love to work with both of them. If I was starting off and went on that show, I’d never make it through as the talent is of such a high standard.”
