Shamed Romanian footballer Adrian Mutu is rumoured to be a target for Newcastle United.
The 32-year-old striker was sacked by Chelsea in 2005 following a seven-month FA ban for failing a drugs test.
Mutu, who had taken cocaine, was later ordered to pay the Stamford Bridge outfit £15 million by FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber for breach of contract.
He was caught misbehaving again last year when he failed an anti-doping test at Italian club Fiorentina – resulting in a nine-month ban.
The controversial striker, who is out of favour in Florence following the ban, is thought to be surplus to requirements with Newcastle United keeping a close eye on him.
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has admitted he is looking to strengthen his squad and a proven goalscorer such as Mutu could provide vital support to the club’s homegrown star Andy Carroll, who is currently injured.
Talking to the Magpies’ official website, Pardew said: “We are still just looking at making offers and making calls.
“There will be some activity in the last few days of the window and I hope we will be part of that.”
